My Tasting Notes

Beers

Classic Pints

Love ’em or hate them, they may be served in hundreds of UK pubs and bars and can be from smaller family-owned regional breweries or large multinational companies, they can offer a consistent product and in the case of real ales could be one of the few options available. They have often played a significant part in the UK’s brewing history and are instantly recognisable brands.

IPA’s

Highly hopped with floral fragrances, lots and lots of citrus fruits, bitterness, and quite often a big alcoholic punch traditional and American-style IPAs are high on my list of favourite beers.

ENGLISH PALE ALES

English Pale Ales are brewed balancing hops and malt. Golden to amber to dark brown in colour they normally range from around 3 to 6 % ABV, although ESB or Extra Special Bitters can be higher. They range from easy drinking session Pale and Golden Ales to Ordinary and Best Bitters through to barrel aged, collectable bottled ESB beers.

wheat beers

From pale American style brews to cloudy Belgium Witbiers with coriander and orange peel wheat beers are predominately made from wheat rather than barely malts and often the yeast is a key ingredient in enhancing the flavour profile.

Welcome to The Caskaway

Personal, subjective and in no way definitive but I hope The Caskaway reveals a little of the passion I have for wine and beer. I’m no expert but I love to learn and wanted to share my knowledge and discoveries with all my drink writing in one convenient place. Why am I doing this when there is so much information out there already? Well, if one person reads and tries something new, I will call that a win.

There are honest tasting notes that you might hopefully find helpful, entertaining and maybe even instructive. Some posts try to help with the confusing and often obscure specialist terminology and language in both the beer and wine worlds and yes, there is a lot! Finally, there are links to all of my favourite recipes made using wine and beer (see below), and finally some expanded reviews of great pubs and other bits and pieces.

Formerly a full-time chef and publican, I’ve worked for two breweries, an award-winning Jersey based wine merchants and now try to write and broadcast about food and drink for local and national media including What’s Brewing and BBC Local Radio.
