For me, writing about food and drink is primarily a creative outlet. Since I stopped working full-time in professional kitchens, it started off as making some nice things to eat, then maybe pairing them with a glass of beer or wine, writing about them, and posting. Now I’m extremely lucky that it has grown into something more than a hobby, and I’m proud that, in an extremely competitive world, I have found some commercial outlets for my work.
This means an incredible amount of research and a lot of pitching ideas to fellow creatives. Many ideas don’t even get off the drawing board. A little of this gets picked up, but most of the time it ends up on my blogs. Yes, a glutton for punishment, I have a foodie site as well. But apparently the best way to improve is to read lots of your peers’ work and to write and write and write. Here are the results: pub visits, foodie days out and anything else I’ve written.
