Corryton Burge Shiraz 2022. Another Shiraz? Another Ozzie Shiraz? Another Barossa Shiraz come on Christian. I have a list of wines to review sitting on file and I’m posting another Shiraz. Why? Well in my new job, I’m lucky to be learning a great deal about different wines from around the world with some fabulous people who really know their stuff. As a result, I can say my tastes are changing from my usual choices of big, bold Rioja’s or Australian Shiraz’s. I have already rediscovered the joys of Pinot Noir in its many guises and interesting wines such as Italian Riesling to Rosé, a style of wine I have never previously considered. As a result of this next step in my wine journey, I thought it would be interesting to write about a good example of a Barossa Shira from this new perspective.

A little bit about Corryton Burge
Corryton Burge is the product of six generations of the Burge family whose ancestors first arrived from England in 1855. Over time the family built a holding of some three hundred hectares of vineyards in South Australia producing amongst others Riesling in Eden Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in Barossa. The wines are all produced at their winery in Tanunda right in the centre of Barossa. Corryton Burge is now run by siblings Trent and Amelia with support from their father Trent and dedicated staff such as chief winemaker Mathew Pellew, a former Barossa Winemaker of the Year. Corryton Burge uses a mix of traditional and new techniques to allow the characteristics of each grape variety to flourish subject to the changing conditions of every vintage.
Corryton Burge Shiraz 2022
A combination of rain and a late summer delayed the harvesting of smaller grapes packed with flavour and acidity. There followed a seven to ten day fermentation in stainless steel with the must being pumped over six times a day. This means liquid is removed from the bottom of the tank and sprayed back over the cap or grape skins to extract the maximum colour and tannins. The finished wine was then matured for twelve months in oak casks.
The appearance is an intense purply red colour with lots of punchy strawberry and ripe blackberry aromas. On tasting, there is plenty more of the ripe fruit with flavours of plums and raspberries to enjoy. The slow oak maturation enhances the expected hints of vanilla and pepper spice and smooths out the rough tannins for a morish velvety finish. Corryton Burge Shiraz 2022 has everything you want from a Southern Australian Shiraz the big fruit flavours, vanilla, and spice but this is wrapped up in a polished smooth finish which makes it very easy to drink. Enjoy this wine for the next few years with a perfectly cooked steak or traditional roast beef.
