Supermarket Slurps – Wolf Blass, Yellow Label Shiraz 2020

Wolf Blass, Yellow Label Shiraz, South Australia 2020. This bottle was on offer in my local supermarket this week and looking for a weekday slurp to go with supper I picked up a bottle. Back when I was a wee whipper snapper of a wine drinker I can remember drinking this big, bold Aussie shiraz and thinking it was good.

Now that was a considerably long time ago and I have been lucky enough to try some exceptional wines since. I have started to explore the world of wine and am learning about different grapes, regions and wine styles and wine definitely does not have to be in your face. There are beautiful subtle wines to be savoured. But it’s important not to forget fundamentally wine is about drinking something you enjoy especially with friends and loved ones and I still like shouty, loud wines

Wolf Blass, Yellow Label Shiraz 2020

Wolf Blass grew from from a Barossa vineyard founded by a German wine maker Wolfgang Blass to being Australia’s leading wine brand by volume. Grapes are now sourced from all over South Australia including Clare Valley, Eden Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. Wolf Blass use these to make a number of different label wines including premium plantinum ones for single vineyard releases. The first premium Shiraz went onto win the 2002 International Wine and Spirit Competition.

Yellow labels are Wolf Blass entry level offer and this wine is a typical Australian fruit forward, easily drinkable Shiraz. Lots of plums and blackcurrants with hints of vanilla, pepper and spice from some maturation in oak. Medium bodied with plenty of acid and robust tannins this wine isn’t particularly elegant and refined but perfectly drinkable for that. Enjoy with a perfectly cooked steak or a big meaty burger cooked on the barbie.

[…] from their wine section, it was reduced to under ten pounds so it can definitely be included in my Supermarket Slurps selection. I tend to look around the ten-pound price mark in the supermarket when buying wine as anything […]

Welcome to The Caskaway

Personal, subjective and in no way definitive but I hope The Caskaway reveals a little of the passion I have for wine and beer. I’m no expert but I love to learn and wanted to share my knowledge and discoveries with all my drink writing in one convenient place. Why am I doing this when there is so much information out there already? Well, if one person reads and tries something new, I will call that a win.

There are honest tasting notes that you might hopefully find helpful, entertaining and maybe even instructive. Some posts try to help with the confusing and often obscure specialist terminology and language in both the beer and wine worlds and yes, there is a lot! Finally, there are links to all of my favourite recipes made using wine and beer (see below), and finally some expanded reviews of great pubs and other bits and pieces.

Formerly a full-time chef and publican, I’ve worked for two breweries, an award-winning Jersey based wine merchants and now try to write and broadcast about food and drink for local and national media including What’s Brewing and BBC Local Radio.
